Buster Britton 2011

I decided in early May or maybe the last week of April that I would do the Buster Britton Triathlon on June 10th 2011 out at Oak Mountain State Park.  Thhis was brought on by not only my boss, but also my neighbor who I had just began running with maybe a week beforehand.  Needless to say my boss and neighbor had to do a lot of twisting to get me interested… but to get me to actually train was going to be much more difficult.  My last triathlon had been in August of 2008 just prior to having some injuries that would set me back for a long while (obviously since it had been almost 3 years since my last race).  I had experienced a great race that August (Mountain Lakes) after DNF’ing at Buster Britton in June of that same year (not before posting a 6:07 400 yard swim) followed by another race in July called the Riverboat Triathlon (first time it had been held and not sure they had another one, but I came out of the water 2nd overall about a step behind the 1st place swimmer – this was out of like 20-25 folks, so don’t go thinking I am all that.. haha).

So lets just say my training was weak at best.  I swam 3 times (total of around 2600 yards) leading up to the race (last time in the water was probably October of last year while at the beach and I don’t believe I did any swimming).  I ran  15 times and biked 23 times (all but 3 or 4 of them were on the trainer) since January began.  I could never get any consistency and none of them were very focused on anything.  I hope I do much better for the next one because my neighbor and my boss are already after me about doing more this summer.

There are some options.. plenty of them actually… some in TN, one in AL and I beleive a couple in FL.  Mountain Lakes is of course the most desired given it is such a fun race and the pool party afterwards for the kids is awesome.  I wouldn’t mind doing one down at the beach and getting a taste of that salt water… salt water races are always fun!!  Whatever I do, I sure hope I train a bit more.  Being prepared makes for a more exciting race.
